Frequently Asked Questions

Is buying really shopping for a living?

No it isn't - it is about selecting the right goods for the market and making sure they sell. You need a degree and some retail experience at the very least. You need to get as much relevant work experience as possible as this is a highly competitive market.
Try to get some buying experience by volunteering to work free of charge for a month with a retail head office. Most will offer this.

What exactly is merchandising?

This is about getting the right amount of stock into the business as the right time and making sure it is sold at the right price. This is a very numerate and commercial role. You need to really enjoy number work and be analytical.

Can I move from merchandising to buying and vice versa?

Not really - the jobs are so different and if you decide that you want to move you will have to start back on the bottom rung of the ladder. And your judgement might be questioned!

Can I move from stores to head office?

Again - you will have to start at the bottom of the ladder but stores experience will stand you in good stead for a head office role.

What are my promotional prospects?

Very good. Everyone in top management roles in retail has started at the bottom - there are no short cuts in this industry.

What will the recruitment process involve?

Typically after your application, you will be interviewed by an HR or line manager, then if successful will move forward to either an assessment centre or second interview. You may also have to undertake some psychometric testing.

What salary and package can I expect?

Salaries and packages vary from one company to another. They should be started in the job ad, and will vary from one location to another.

What training and development can I expect?

Training and development is key to your success and that of your employer. All retailers offer both on the job and off site training to one extent or another. Overall your training and development will be delivered through:

  • On the job coaching
  • Workshops
  • Formal training courses
  • On-line learning
  • Coaching and mentoring
  • Buddying
  • Seminars
  • Developments centres
  • Books, tape sand videos
